March Flash and Booking
Hello and welcome to March Flash and Booking! As always, in order to book a session with me, please respond directly to this email or send a separate email to sevkoresh@gmail.com. Booking guidelines are in the second portion of the email body. This month I’m including a longer bit of writing inspired by my developing fascination with deep time. I’m hoping to continue including more substantial pieces of writing in these emails from now on. If you’re just interested in the flash portion, feel free to skip it, I’ll never know. :)
Over the last month or so, I have been immersing myself in the concept of deep time. There can be a misconception of nihilism surrounding the concept of human history being merely a paragraph in the many proverbial volumes which contain the story of our earth. So many things I've read about the ancientness of our planet posit the idea of our lives literally being a blip as a scary or pessimistic one- philosophers and scientists alike preface the idea with a plea to their audience to not be terrified by the concept. I personally could not think of anything more comforting than imagining each of our human lives as a beautiful and brief exploration of short-term symbiosis, fueled by the very same matter which first appeared at the basal pit of the great primordial swamp, miraculously blessed by the mystery of consciousness. The idea that our bodies are comprised of some of the very same molecules that were present at the dawn of the red earth feels more like an honor than a horror; more of a privilege than a threat. This concept brings me back down to earth when I am entangled in the sometimes menacing, echoing hallways of the plane of thought, or when I am trapped in the seemingly locked chamber of the ego. In both of these aforementioned spaces, of course, consciousness has provided us the tools necessary to survive life as relational beings. But sometimes it's nice to look up at a vast sky (which knows the concept of time in a manner that is barely fathomable to us) and feel a sense of greater connectedness to time's passage, a mechanism of nature which can often seem cruel, but is, more than anything, divinely neutral. In this light, each revolution around a star which has risen and set innumerable times before becomes a benevolent cyclical reminder of the inevitability of change and the lessons it brings. Our bodies become dazzling avatars of ancient bacterial intelligence. Our planet becomes as sacred as it ever was. Our universe becomes ever more numinous.Â
Geologist and astrobiologist Robert Hazen described an accessible way of imagining the very depths of linear geological time as looking something like this: Go on a walk, and imagine each footstep as representing one hundred years. If you keep walking at the same pace, imagine how long you'd have to walk to represent one thousand years, one hundred thousand years, one million years- turns out, if you walked about 20 miles a day, each pace representing one hundred years, it would take you more than four years of walking to go "back" to the very beginnings of earth's history. If that doesn't fill you with a tremendous sense of awe and comfort and connectivity to all life on this planet, I don't know what will. I guess my point is, understanding a sense of time outside of ourselves- time beyond the genesis of the creatures and organisms before us who allowed us to become who we presently are- can give us a renewed sense of compassion for ourselves and for everything and everyone with whom we share this experience. I like to think that spending time with the idea of how vast time really is can inspire an observant curiosity at our own inner landscapes and ways of functioning. Maybe it can help us to enjoy a sense of reality more expansive than the great long haunted hallways of our thoughts which can seem like eternal labyrinths, but are, in reality, just airy imprints on the unmeasurable subconscious of a world which persists with or without us- and will for the next few eons at least.Â
Isn't that nice?
Now, down to business.
Booking is first come, first served. Please respond to this email to the desired date/dates you are looking to book, the number of the flash piece you are interested in getting, and comfortable range of budget. If your desired date and/or image has already been secured, I will gladly offer some alternatives that are available. Modifying flash (zeroing in on a part of an image, extending texture to blend more seamlessly with skin, etc) is always an option! I am taking customs within the realm of the subject matter I usually deal with: found/decayed objects and relics, marine/paleobiology, geology. If it involves a textural representation of the effects of time on an object/planet or if it looks like an alien life form, I’m usually interested! NOTE: If you have a specific custom concept inspired by or similar to a piece that you’ve seen me do, feel free to inquire- however, I never ever replicate pieces which I have made before, so please do not ask me to do so.
Upon receiving an email request to secure a piece and date, I will send back an intake form with information for you on pricing, process, etc, as well as some information for me that you can fill out regarding sizing, placement, accessibility and sensory needs, etc.
OPEN DATES: March 2nd, 4th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 14th, 16th, 21st, 23rd, 25th, 28th, 30th
AVAILABLE PIECES:
Here’s hoping that the idea of being an inconceivably small fragment of the greater cosmological scheme brings you the same comfort it has been bringing me. Takes a little bit of the pressure off.
Looking forward to everything the coming month has to bring and wishing everyone safety, warmth, and stillness as the winter wanes.
In awe and exploration,
