August Flash and Booking
Hello and welcome to August Flash and Booking! As always, in order to book a session with me, please respond directly to this email or send a separate email to sevkoresh@gmail.com. Booking guidelines are in the second portion of the email body.
A few weeks ago my friend (and trusted source for awe-striking geological phenomena fodder) Chris introduced me to an erosion process occurring in granular rock called "tafoni weathering" (also called preferential weathering). It's a type of geological decay that creates intricate systems of cavernous holes or pockets along the face of a rock mass, taking its name from the greek "taphos," meaning tomb- its effects create texture patterns which uncannily mirror the entropic and intricate chambers of certain genera of coral, resulting in what I imagine it would look like if the prop design team of Cronenberg's "eXistenZ" were unleashed upon an arid desert. Not only are patterns of tafoni breathtakingly beautiful but a single root cause of the phenomena hasn't been pinpointed by geologists; many possible causes have been posited, including salt weathering, which causes crystallization in the pores of the rock making the weakened area in question susceptible to further erosion, marine life boring holes into coastal rock formations, wind erosion, frost shattering, a combination of any of the above based on climate. Tafoni-like patterns were also discovered on outcroppings of Martian rock in the early 80s. Tafoni weathering checks all of the boxes for me: beautiful, mysterious, cavernous, evocative of some sort of body horror, a keystone of possible exobiological discovery- and most of all, it's more concrete evidence of the brilliance of decay in its ability to create coherent, self-organizing patterns beyond our wildest monkey-brained dreams.Â
This month, I'm including some tafoni weathering images in my flash along with some more images I would love to work with from the disease pathology book you heard all about in last month's newsletter. Scroll for some reminders that no matter what new, beautiful thing we may try to create, nature did it better, did it smarter, and did it two billion years ago.Â
Booking is first come, first served. Please respond to this email to the desired date/dates you are looking to book, the number of the flash piece you are interested in getting, and comfortable range of budget. If your desired date and/or image has already been secured, I will gladly offer some alternatives that are available. Modifying flash (zeroing in on a part of an image, extending texture to blend more seamlessly with skin, etc) is always an option! I am taking customs within the realm of the subject matter I usually deal with: found/decayed objects and relics, marine/paleobiology, geology, microbiology, disease pathology. If it involves a textural representation of the effects of time on an object/planet or if it looks like an alien life form, I’m usually interested!
NOTE: If you have a specific custom concept inspired by or similar to a piece that you’ve seen me do, feel free to inquire- however, I never ever replicate pieces which I have made before, so please do not ask me to do so.
Upon receiving an email request to secure a piece and date, I will send back an intake form with information for you on pricing, process, etc, as well as some information for me that you can fill out regarding sizing, placement, budget, accessibility and sensory needs, etc.
OPEN DATES: August 1st, 3rd, 10th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 29th and 31st.
AVAILABLE PIECES:
As always, thanks for bearing with me as I discuss my latest fixation- I will say, I’ve been having a wonderful time exploring the disease pathology imagery and am anticipating enjoying covering somebody’s skin in tiny little geological tombs just as much.
I also hope everyone has gotten the chance to dramatically walk into the sea this summer, and if you need any especially haunted New England beach recommendations before the season is over, you know where to find me…
In awe and exploration,
